SACRAMENTO -- A second suspect has been arrested in an alleged "sweetheart swindle" that cost a Citrus Heights man more than $300,000, authorities said Wednesday.

Richard Mitchell was arrested Monday, 20 days after his wife, Belinda Mitchell, 36, was charged with obtaining cash and gifts by false pretenses from a victim identified only as Tim, 34.

Richard Mitchell, 34, is charged with conspiracy and five counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, said sheriff's Sgt. Lou Fatur.

The two are being held in the county jail in lieu of $350,000 bail each.

The alleged victim told police that Belinda Mitchell claimed to be a widow when she pretended to be his girlfriend between 1999 and this spring. He said he gave her cash and gifts, believing her promises to marry him.

A few months ago, he said, he began to suspect she was married to Richard Mitchell, whom she had introduced as her brother.

An attorney for Richard Mitchell said it was "too early to respond" to the allegations.

Tim "gave this lady a number of presents, and they're alleging that my client, who was her husband, was aware of what she was doing and was aiding and abetting in some way," attorney Charles F. Bloodgood said.

Bloodgood said he must review police reports before making further comments.
